need help on fixing corrupted disc drive on laptop

My laptop's disc drive dosent work and it tells me it's either corrupted or its missing (code 39), this happened after i tried to install a software program that wasnt compatible with windows vista, but i did not know that till after someone told me.... so what should i do or can do to fix it myself without having to pay $150 or more to the geek squad....

Problem: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Resolution: The driver may be corrupt. You should uninstall the current driver, then click scan for hardware changes. To reinstall the driver.

Vista has a unique feature where you can restore system on the date privious day of the softwares loaded on your PC when it got corrupted.
Search for System restore and you will find it.
