Then look at the human. Love is very much linked in the initial phase to attraction (mostly but not entirely physical). Why? It's not shallow we look at those characteristics that we equate to success and health because that is important for reproduction and subsequent rearing. Thereafter we will spend approximately 19 years raising each child - one quarter of our lives! Thereafter it still isn't over, humans have long had a grandparenting role,seen pretty much only in us and the primates.

We humans have a biological reason to stick together through life from the time we depart the single state through to the very end.

This is the purpose of love in the biological sense. It doesn't cover homosexual love which is geared more towards physical attraction and companionship. It doesn't cover parental love which is more directed towards ensuring the survival of our genetic line. Even that doesn't fully explain the role of foster parents, but then I think they are providing a loving environment for kids more than 'loving them' as such.

The important thing is that we all recognise the value of love. We all feel uneasy with areas that devalue it like hard-core pornography whether we partake in it or not. I would argue that it is fundamental to our continued existence as a species.
