At what age should a child get a cell phone?

It depends on a number of factors. Some parents just have to get their kids a cellphone as they word during the whole day and their kid might be going to a friends house or night school, have a tutor....
Also depends on how much parents trust their kid, and how well he takes care of his belongings, since you don't want it to end up in the 'lost-and-not found' on the first day..

hi lisa, i think that a child should get a mobile until they are in high school, and are responsible enough to use one.

when they get their license, they don't really need one until they can go out on their own. Before they get their license, you probably know exacly where they are.

well what is it used for? if it is for freinds to call then 7th or 8th grade but if it is for calling mom or dad there are phones that the parent program 4 numbers into it and this can be good for younger kids

My initial response is 'never', as long as you are paying her bills! However, when your child reaches drinking age, he/she should be able to contact you by cell if they don't feel sober enough to drive! Personally, no one should have a cell phone if they can't pay for it themselves! Cellphone abuse only occurs when someone else is picking up the tab! Give this subject serious thought!

I didnt let my children have cell phones till they entered high school at the age of 12 and 13, due to them walking home. They also sms me if they have to go to the library etc and that way no worries

I Think that the appropriate time to let a child have a mobile phone is when they are in thier middle teens. This way if they travel anywhere without you it is easy for them to get in contact with you. However, if pre paid mobiles are available in the U.S. I would choose that options as you can control the amount of phone calls they can make..

It shouldnt be a specific age, more a level of maturity. Probly more so that they can take care of the phone than anything it can be usefull to keep track of a child or connect with them.

Children need cell phones as soon as they are of an age that they find themselves in situations where there's not an adult around to chaperone or drive. My kids demanded it when they were in highschool. I told them that their cell phone is for my convenience, not theirs and they are required to have it on and have it charged when they are not supervised.
