Little Joe lives in a home with a dysfunctional parent who abuses alcohol and gets into irate moods under the influence. Dad asks " did you spill that glass of milk on the carpet"? Little Joe will say "no, dad" to avoid a beating. Codependents of abusive persons tend to lie to protect themselves from verbal, emotional, mental and physical abuse.

John Doe is homosexual and lives with relatives whom he knows to be anti gay. When asked at each family reunion why he has not brought a "sweet girl" home as a date, he has to make up various excuses to protect his identity. He is attempting to avoid being exposed to the painful experience of being rejected by his family. (though no doubt in my mind, "leaving in such tight closet" must be very painful).

Jane Doe just received her diagnosis of an incurable and potentially fatal illness. Her adult children quiz her with questions about "what did the doctor say?". To preserve them from worry and distress, she blends the truth with a few lies such as " It is no big deal, we are going to treat it just like we treat a cold". When in reality, she was told her illness will progress to the point of terminality despite of treatments.

Another scenario : X was told her husband completed suicide. When calling his family and relatives, she lies about the circumstances of his death, she sees no purpose in sharing information which would undeniably cause added distress and grief to experiencing the loss of a loved one.

I hope you must be satisfied with my reasoning and that is why we shall use our brain when to tel truth and whn not to for the good cause always.

Lies only make the situation worse, if not now then later. People will lose trust in you and look at you in a whole different way, though of course they will not always openly say it. Its best to tell the truth, always....may the force be with you :P

so , as a conclusion, I think it's alright to lie from time to time, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

We lie all the time. We're not being bad just sensitive most of the time. Imagine you have a friend who is a bit down in the dumps but is wearing a ghastly outfit. Do you say the truth - " You look bloody awful"? Of course not. Lying is an essential part of being human. If you don't do it you're a monster.

Lies are deceitful and a person who lies is dishonest. Nobody trust a dishonest person. Whenever you lie you lose a little bit of yourself. First you start with one lie, then you have to lie some more to sustain the first lie, until it becomes impossible to stop. Honesty is best, tell the truth at all times, but don't hurt peoples feelings in the way. Be honest not mean. There's a difference. Everybody trust an honest person.

While instead i pushed him further from me and it only caused more problems. Eventually after telling him the ENTIRE truth, he finnally forgave me. However there is one situation where one may lie. Those are the situations of "white lies." Call it a raceist term all you want but in these situations you can't tell the person the truth without making things worse. For exapmle, person one says, "do you think my dress looks pretty?" Your responce if you told the truth would be "Ew! Are you kidding me?! An overweight orka whale could wear that and look better!" However, the person could do one of two things, tell the truth with discression or tell a lie that will most likely and 90% of the time not cause any further problems. But, how can one tell if it is a white lie situation or if they should tell the straight out truth? That is all varried based on the situation.

So the final verdict, don't lie, it makes things only worse. Lie ONLY if you know it will not cause a future problem. You are all smart people, use discression.
