cell phone hack
Asked by: Sixsmith

i was wondering if it's be possible to hack an old cell phone to be an really really good cordless phone.
maybe by making your own base station and some signal alterations?
might the frequency's necessary be illegal, and would it be possiable to alter them and still get good service around your yard
i have a rather large yard. so the extra distance would be nice

the answers I've gotten cover only one part of the question and not even the main topic. the question is "is it possible and how do you do it"
Additional Details added
(04/18/08):
okay still unanswered, hypothetically speaking of course because i tend to avoid breaking the law. what would be necessary, e.g a moded or "homemade " base station for the transmission and receiving of signals? . . change some sort of signal interface?. . . completely change the frequency? (which if it was changed to a regular cordless phone and boost the signal might be legal)
i don't plan to do any of this because first of it would cost too much and i could probably buy quite a few minutes for my phone with the money. but i got to wondering the how and why of this. y'all probably know what i mean.

The answer to your question is...YES, it is possible. However, it is EXTREMELY ILLEGAL. The FCC freely hands out HUGE fines for such acts. I agree if you want more distance use your cell. Hope this helps.

My best advice to you is to carry your cell phone with you since it is legal and if you do manage to get an old cell phone to work it would be against the FCC rules and the fine you would have to pay would pay your cell phone bill for months if not years.
The FCC does NOT take it lightly when a person starts broadcasting on unauthorized frequencies, it is not going to be just a little slap on the hands...

Turn your telephone over and read what's on the bottom of it. It isn't a crime for someone to listen to you.. You are the criminal for creating interference on their receiver,. You have to have a licence TO TRANSMIT or receive on the armature bands read the FCC rules. Don't be too quick to try to do anything about it.
