The 1956 Games in Melbourne provided Rose with his finest moment. He won three gold medals - in the 400m, the 1,500m and the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Four years later Rose won another three medals. He defended his 400m crown but was beaten into second place in the 1,500m by compatriot John Konrads. He also won a bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
