how do i play online games on ps3 using usb internet

i have trouble connecting my ps3 to our virgin media it keeps timing out wen it is looking for ip addy i have also got a pay as you go modem on three and it wont connect to internet it is really annoying

You will need to connect the PS3 to an Ethernet device of some kind. Typically this will be referred to as a NAT Router. From the sounds of it you have a cable modem that provides no Ethernet port to your computer and instead uses a USB adapter that requires software running on your computer.
