Dog Getting Into The Trash
Asked by: mkay0013

Our dog keeps getting into the trash. She'll take things out of the trash, bring them into the living room, then rip them up (she loves paper towels or plastic bags that had lunch meat in them, but I don't think she eats any of it). She knows that she shouldn't be doing it; when we come home and see what she did, she often tries to run away because she knows we'll yell at her. It began when we started feeding her less (the vet told us that she was a little overweight and to cut back a little on the food), but even when we fed her the usual amount she still would get into the trash. And it's not like we don't take out the trash very often and it piles up, she gets into it even when there isn't that much. She used to do it only when we weren't home, but recently she has done it when we haven't been in the kitchen/living room. Any suggestions?

First id like to say. Your dog doesnt know she shouldnt be doing it. Dogs dont think like us. The reason your dog runs away and mabe has the guilty look is simply because dogs can sense our emotions and if the dog is sencing your not happy it will not want to be near you. Dogs dont understand why people yell at them. I mean if you were say in a foreign country and you didnt know the language and someone asked you not to do something and you carried on doing it because you didnt know what they were saying and thery start...

Well, there are many possible anwsers to that question... First off, if you have a garbage with a lid on it, try taking some pennies and putting it on top of the lid. when the dog tries to open it, the change will fall and will startle the dog. another technique would be to put some vaseline around the edge of your gabage. In most cases the animal does not like the taste of it when they lick it off and will eventualy stop. you can also try another technique which will get him to stop... Put some tape on the edes of your...

Try pouring a little bit of Ammonia on the trash, most dogs will avoid the trash because of the smell. Ammonia is in the cleaning aisle of any grocery store.

Outwit and outmaneuver. If your dog is really a Dumpster-diver and a food-on-counter stealer, you're going to have to beat him at his own game to reduce his calorie intake. The first step is just accepting that this is a problem that affects your dog's health and that it needs to be dealt with. Perhaps if Rover has been augmenting his diet by helping himself to the all-you-can-eat garbage buffet for a long time, you've come to accept this as the way things are. Try one of the following to break your dog's bad habit:
