In the 1993 movie "And the Band Played On," Alan Alda played a scientist. He had earlier made it clear that he would confer only with other scientists in his own rank on the subject of AIDS. The character played by Matthew Modine also was a scientist, but a CDC scientist of junior rank. Later, when both characters were in the same conference room to discuss the subject along with other scientists, Alan Alda insisted on his request and Matthew Modine was asked to leave the room, and he did. The question is, what is the name for this thing that Alan Alda did, whereby an academic will confer only with someone in his own rank?

I would describe this as neglecting the possibility that lower-rank scientest might make a great contribution by adding their own point of view to the conference.

I believe that we are talking about pride/arrogance. Even though the character played by Modine would have been able to help in the case of AIDS, the character played by Alda just didn't want the point of view of someone that is "technically" not as qualified. I would qualify it as a psychological blocking.
