what are some artifact on quilts during the african american slavery time?

Well, one of the answers is that the quilts themselves were maps in code. They contained scenery and details that would lead a slave to the underground railroad. Quilts were hung out supposedly to dry on porches or lines by people who were involved with the Underground Railroad, and by following the "directions" on the quilt, a slave could make it to a safe place.
