In the UK, phone boxes can be traced by the police or via a request to BT, but there is no trace number you can call, as there is in US.

In the US there is a call trace feature, *57(star 5 7). You dial it right after you hang up the phone from the call to be traced. It doesn't matter how long you talked. It costs $4.00 per call and only the Police can retrieve the results of the trace. Perhaps this feature is available where you are, too.

If you receive a nuisance, threatening, malicious or obscene phone call -- first, hang up for more than 2 seconds. Then pick up the phone, get a dial tone and dial the Call Trace Code (*57). A recorded announcement will inform you whether the last call to your phone was successfully traced (most calls can be traced).

Calls which have had CallerID blocked by dialing *67 (as well as nuisance calls that ring once, then hang up) can be traced by dialing *57. However, only the last call can be traced, as each new incoming call replaces the previous Call Trace information.

Please note that, due to Federal Communications Commission rules about the Secrecy of Communications, we cannot give you the caller's phone number (except through legal processes while investigating a police case). When you contact us requesting that we provide information on the call you have traced, we can investigate and attempt to resolve any ongoing problem. However, please do not ask that we divulge the caller's number.
