In the mid-1960's, I first saw an old movie on TV, the title of which I can't remember, in which LJ Cobb played the role of a washed-up doctor, begging for money from a stranger, in India, I believe. When the stranger called him a bum, Cobb yelled and cried as he replied by saying, "BUM? Johns Hopkins Medical School, Chief of Surgery, etc., etc.", as he recalled his lamented career and life. The stranger was shocked to hear it coming from someone who was so dirty, unshaven, homeless, poor and so far from home.

It was a very minor sequence of an old movie that pre-dated the time and even television. I have seen that same minor sequence of that same old movie quite a few times over the years, but never the whole film, which is why I can't remember the title of it. My now ex-wife was THE movie authority told me that it could have been a different actor who you mistakenly think was Lee J. Cobb. Actors sometimes vaguely resemble one another, so the movie audience think the actor is someone else when the credit isn't theirs at all. Hollywood knows how actors could be credited for films that aren't their own, so it's been known and understood for years. I believe it was LJ Cobb because the sound of his voice, his looks and his cry is unmistakable. I compared him to known roles of Cobb, such as Kramden in the old Flint Movies, who is so well-remembered for yelling, "Flint's alive!, Did ya hear that?, FLINT'S ALIVE!, FLINT'S ALIVE!!!" and they matched perfectly well, so I'm still sure it was LJ Cobb after all.

From 1999 to about 2001, we went through all the databanks, such as imdb.com, then to movie historians and drove them all to drinking, early retirement and suicide, but no luck. We went all the way up to trying to contact his relatives, former co-stars and/or agents, but didn't because divorce was first on our agenda. I want to know how his role went in that old movie and, especially, how it ended. This is my advice: Don't go through all the easily-thought of sources because we tried them all for more than just two years, including historians and Hollywood librarians, so go right up to the top, which is to contact his relatives, etc. That's because only people who were closest to him are likely to know the answer.

It's a tough trivia question to answer because it might have been a cameo appearance of his, in which case it wouldn't rate high enough to be included with all of his accomplishments, such as a movie star and TV show of the 1960's, now I'm begging for help from a stranger.

I know his bio very well and even met him once when I was a high school kid in 1976 in NYC. As I said, it must have been a cameo appearance of his in that movie, so the only ones who can and will know are his family or former co-stars. My now ex-wife and I went through all of these questions & answers many times over, so the only way to solve it is to ask his family and/or former co-stars because they are the only ones who will know and the only ones left to ask.

lisalisa1, it could have been Channel 7 because that was my favorite channel for casual TV watching.

I saw that same minor sequence of that same old movie quite a few times, but never the whole film, which is why I'm so sure of myself. I also met Lee J. Cobb once in NYC when I was a high school student in 1975, so I am very sure it was him after all.

If I saw that sequence again, with the stranger approaching him on our left and Lee J. Cobb towards the right with the typical-looking temples and background of India, I believe, I would know it in a tenth of a second.

Remember, don't get bogged down with these commonly-thought of questions because all the experts have asked us at one point or another and all led us to a dead end. Try and go right up to asking his family and/or former co-stars because I think they are the only ones who can answer it.

Recently, I noticed he had a daughter, Maria, born 1947. Try contacting the people who can put you in contact with other family or former co-stars.

Channel 7 was the most likely one because it was a favorite of mine for "casual viewing." Secondly, I first saw it in the mid-1960's, then that same minor sequence or scene of the movie whose title I have long-since forgot.

I'm sure it was Lee J. Cobb and the sequence, I remember, had little to do with the theme of the movie, which is partly why it stood out so much in my mind over the years. It was as much a shock to me as it was to the stranger who first called Lee J. Cobb "a bum," then heard Cobb cry as he recalled his lamented career and life, saying, "BUM??? Johns Hopkins Medical School, Chief of Surgery, etc., etc."

It was an old movie that pre-dated the 1960's and it might have pre-dated TV, etc., etc. I compared the actor to known roles of Cobb, such as Kramden in the old Flint Movies and they matched perfectly well. Also, I met Lee J. Cobb once in 1975 when he was filming a movie or show in NYC, so it is not likely I'm far off about him. If it was an actor who resembles Cobb, then look for a list of actors who are known to be mistaken for LJ Cobb and search for their roles in movies made before the mid-1960's.

My now ex-wife and I went through all of this and more for over two years with movie historians and librarians when we heard that a few took up drinking, early retirement and, some, committed suicide, but I have no idea what to say, except now I'm begging for help from a stranger.

Don't get bogged down with the commonly-thought of questions and answers, go right to the top, which is where we left off, which is to contact his family and/or former co-stars because they are the only ones who will know.

Reply to Bugsybab (Jennifer Lewis) in Vancouver, Canada: So, you know right off the bat I'm wrong and no question about it? Did you people do the research, including cameo appearances? A cameo appearance is a brief, five minutes or less, part in a movie for the sake of billing and pulling more people in to see it. Unethical? Maybe, but the face remains you could easily miss it because cameo appearances are so minute when talking about such a prolific actor as Lee J. Cobb, which is why it probably wouldn't be included in his history.

Reply to Lisalisa1 and JVDreamWorker:

Time period was mid-1960's, channel 7 was probably it, I've seen that same minor sequence or scene in that same old movie quite a few times over the years, so I'm still sure it was Lee J. Cobb after all, look for movies made BEFORE the mid-1960's because it was already an old movie that pre-dated the time and maybe even Television.

As I said many times, my now ex-wife and I went through ALL these commonly-thought of questions and answers by movie historians and hollywood librarians, but they all quit, took up drinking, accepted early retirement and, some, even suicide, which is why I urge you to go right to the top, which is where we left off, which is to contact his family (daughter and grandchildren by now) and/or former co-stars for the answer because they are the only ones who can & will know.

If it was a cameo appearance of his, and I believe it was because the scene had very little to do with the movie itself, it might not be included in his list of starring roles because he was such a giant in his field, so a cameo appearance would be insignificant and, therefore, not mentioned.

His family and/or co-stars were closest to him and the only ones who can & will know for sure.

JVDreamWorker, I don't remember the title of the movie, but I do remember that the scene had very little to do with the movie's plot. The background looked like India to me, with the typical-looking buildings behind him and both the stranger & Cobb were American and in a distant land. The stranger was shocked to hear so much come from a homeless man, begging for money from a stranger, when Cobb replied by saying, "BUM? Johns Hopkins Medical School, Chief of Surgery, etc., etc," as he recalled his lamented career and life.

That's the same scene from the same movie whose title I have long since forgotten that I have seen quite a few times over the years, so I'm still sure it was Lee J. Cobb after all. That's why I suggested it was a cameo appearance of his. That's because it wouldn't be rated significant enough to be included in his list of starring roles, hence you would miss it by searching through his bio.

As I said many, many times, 'My ex-wife and I went through all of this until we got to the point of trying to contact his family and/or former co-stars for the answer.' They are the only ones who will know or can find out, so don't get bogged down with the commonly-thought of sources of answers because we went through them all repeatedly.

Go right to the top, which is where we left off and ask to contact his family and/or co-stars for the answer. Do what I say or you're going to wind up begging for help from a stranger, too.

To one and all, hear this: You can't be asking me what movie it was nor asking me to watch the movie and then, presumably, come back online and report that you won. YOU have to do the movie watching, find that sequence that no one in this quadrant of the galaxy could miss, then tell me the title and how Cobb's role finally went in that movie.

The Song of Bernadette is one movie you can disqualify right now. I saw it on the "4 O'Clock Movie" many times in the '70's, so I know that wasn't it.

If you think of the movie, watch it, then give me the title, a synopsis of his role and how it ended.

That is the question and that defines the winner!

To one and all: You can't just ask nor guess which movie it was in order to win. In order to win, you have to see the movie, give me it's title and then FINALLY tell me how Lee J. Cobb's role went in it. How did his role go from start to finish, including being a homeless man, begging for help from a stranger, in India, I believe, to what by the conclusion of the movie. How did his role go in that movie and how did it end? A brief synopsis of it?

Guessing, asking me which movie it was, over and over, again and again is not going to win! YOU HAVE TO TELL ME, NOT ASK ME, IN ORDER TO WIN!

Pretty soon, I'm going to need a doctor, cause I'm begging for help from all you strangers.

To One and All, I answered the question of what channel it was, it was probably Channel 7 because that was for casual viewing (just turn on the TV and see whatever's on), so I believe that's it and, as I said many, many times, I first saw it in the mid-1960's and it was already an old movie that was edited or made for TV. It pre-dated the time, which was the mid-1960's, and maybe even Television, so anything after the mid-1960's and you're wasting your time.

Incidentally, Lee J. Cobb died in 1976, so he didn't make any many movies after that time. I met him once in 1975 in NYC when I was a high school kid and I'm repeating myself too many times for my own good!

YOU ALL have to see the movie, tell me you identified the scene, which we must all know by now, then give me the title and tell me how his role went in it or you don't win.

Asking me the same questions repeatedly is driving me up the wall, I'm sorry to say!

The made-for-TV Dr. Max is cut from the same cloth as The Last Angry Man. Lee J. Cobb stars as a taciturn elderly doctor who chooses to work in a dingy Baltimore neighborhood and minister to those far less fortunate than themselves. His refusal to succumb to the creature comforts of a more lucrative practice causes a great deal of friction between himself and his family. In traditional "movie of the week" fashion, however, the old medico proves to have a lot more sense than those around him. Dr. Max was first telecast April 4, 1974.

My theory: You stated that the Lee J Cobb replied to the stranger and called him a bum, Cobb yelled and cried as he replied by saying, "BUM? Johns Hopkins Medical School, Chief of Surgery, etc., etc.", (Johns Hopkins Medical School in located in Baltimore, Maryland)
Note: I asked google "Lee J. Cobb television shows and discovered Dr. Max...My question: Are you sure it was in India? Maybe Hollywood made it seems it was made in India...

When Alistair Cooke shows up to introduce Three Faces of Eve, we know that the fact-based story will bear more than a little fidelity to truth. Joanne Woodward won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Eve, a young Georgia housewife suffering from multiple personalities. Eve's husband (David Wayne), confused by his wife's aberrant behavior when assuming her two "other selves," seeks out help from a psychiatrist (Lee J. Cobb). Carefully probing Eve's subconscious via hypnosis, the doctor finds out that, though each of Eve's personalities is aware of the other's existence, none are related. After months of therapy, Eve is purged of her negative selves and is totally cured. Ironically, Joanne Woodward would herself play a psychologist confronted with a multiple-personality case in the Emmy-winning 1976 TV movie Sybil.

The Dark Past-1948
In this faithful remake of Blind Alley (1939), psychoanalyst Andrew Collins (Lee J. Cobb), his wife, his son, and some friends are taken hostage by escaped murderer Al Walker (William Holden) and his gang, including girlfriend Betty (Nina Foch). Collins, an advocate of rehabilitating criminals through psychiatry, induces his captor to talk about himself through the course of the night. By calmly and methodically piecing together the strands of the killer's unconscious motivation, Collins rids Walker of his literally murderous rage and prevents a massacre. Shrinks who practice in the noir universe are frequently painted as absurdly omnipotent. When not using their power for evil, like Dr. Cross (Vincent Price) in Aubrey Schenck's Shock (1949), they may be capable, like the benign Dr. Collins, of miracle cures. A more complex depiction of an unrealistically powerful, but ambiguously motivated, psychiatrist can be seen in Joseph Losey's The Sleeping Tiger (1954). In that British film, Dr. Clive Esmond (Alexander Knox) cures a criminal in a few short months but destroys his own marriage in the process.

I don't know how you think anyone can contact his friends and family. Those people are impossible to get ahold of.

But, I have an email in to Turner Classic Movies. I don't know how long it will take them to get back with me. I could not contact channel 7, they keep their phone private and only take feedback and comments on their site, no emails or questions.

The closest thing I could come up with is the movie / t.v. show.....

Dr. Kildare is an NBC medical drama television series which ran from September 27 1961 until April 5 1966, encompassing a total of 190 episodes. The show, which premiered at the same time as an ABC medical drama, Ben Casey, quickly achieved success and helped spark a number of new shows dealing with the medical field.

Don't be discouraged, it's there, but may not be Cobb.
I remember seeing it in the 80s or 90's. I think it is in a short seg in the rolling Hollywood history specials they run with a few memorable seconds and lines from certain movies or regarding certain actors in a fast millieu over several minutes. Check there for a lead..(75th anniversary celebration reel?)
Either way, it peaked my interest and I caught it one lazy B movie day. I'm rememembering a sophisticated plot/scheme in major metro area gone awry and the doctor sacrificed everything in lieu of promised fortune, and/or love but ended up at rendezvous the abandoned one unable to go back and others betrayed dead or caught and the woman involved died and lost the prize or something. I watched it on a channel at that time when they were playing Panic in the City and another movie that week where a detective uncovered a Russian atomic bomb in the city after tracking a murderer where victims were burned or died transporting radioactive material. In the end he was lifted by helicopter and, already dying of radiation exposure, secured the bomb that was carried out off the pacific coast(LA or S.F.) and exploded with him.
The movie you seek was in that genre and grouping of oldies programming.
If I remember more I'll write. You may be able to check it on stations that broadcast these types before all the specialty cable channels and Turner Classic started(or at least I didn't have them. More likely the UHF channels of broadcast. These oldies are usually grouped and sold to stations in packets
and checking through studio archive leases/rentals to local stations may help
if you check packets they group.
