I would say, "I don't want to date you any more." or
"I don't want to have a romantic relationship with you, but I'd like to be your friend.
Honesty is the best policy. I think you should not go into detail about the reasons.
You might try to do it with people close by if you think he might harm you....

just say, "hey fella, i don't want to see you anymore!"

Be honest, say 'You just want to be friends'. Or say 'You are a bit messed up, and you need to clear you head' That is if you are scared he will get angry.
